Update - Dharma Donkey Sanctuary - Jan 2003

The 18th of January was in important day as Dharma Donkey Sanctuary of Sagrloi had Organised a Vaccination and deworming programme for the donkays from all around the area.It wasthe fourth time that such a programme was being organised. It is done twice a year on a regular basis now.We woke up and saw that the hustle bustle was on already. Several donkeys had arrived already. Infact we could hear a few donkeys in the night so I think some donkeys arrived at night itself. We had Donkeys who were brought from Mukhed village, which is a considerable 60 kilometers far. The Peons from SSM schools had come and setup a tent. Lots of chairs and Tables were arranged. Abhijeet had Appointed Maharashtra Cadet Corps {MCC} Students to help out them. They also did a lot of work. Carrying tables and chairs controlling crowds and lots of other small things. They also helped the doctors to fill injections and carried the medicine along when the doctors were giving oral doses.

We had to wait a long time for the doctors to arrive. The ambulance from Udgir Vetenary collage came with the Doctors and Interns at 10.30 am. They first came to our Guesthouse, had tea and from there proceeded to the ground. It took them some time to Organize and setup their Stuff. They were in all 5 Doctors and 15 Interns who had come to study. They first started checking all the donkeys and collected Samples of Blood of those animals who were ill and some of fit animals as well they wanted to study it. The Chief doctor Dr.Markandey was only ordering and supervising. He did not do any active work. To be frank this group was more on a study trip then Social work. The team from Blue Cross-arrived at around 11.30 p.m. They were thorough professionals. They got to work right away. No rest no going to the bathroom after a long journey anything. They straight Away got around doing their work without any assistance. Dr Rao looked as if he was a horrible person at first sight but he is a gem of a person. He listened to all the villagers and talked to them in a very friendly manner. He also tought the Students from Udgir collage and explained them any doubts they had.

Babasaheb Deshmukh also came for some time and met all the Doctors. He invited all for Lunch after the work was done.

The Camp was a sight in itself. It cannot be compared. So many Donkeys .

The camp was well organized. They setup a register and those who came must register themselves and were given token numbers and their donkeys were treated it that order. All the donkeys were first sprayed then injected and then were given oral dozes. Some of the donkeys that were ill were given medicines. Dr.Rao was a free hand in handing out medicines. He started giving out food Supplements and the donkey owners were out of control to collect it. We all had lot of trouble to keep them under control. The tables were gong to fall and it was a mess. Finally we dispersed the crowd.

There were reporters from E.Tv to cover the occasion. On camera. They took good shots of the donkeys being treated and also took a personal Interview of abhijeet. Abhijeet told them in detail how it was the Dream of Bonny Aunty to help the donkeys and how we ended up organizing this camp and DDS. The TV correspondents also took Shots of DDS and our Donkeys. They Also Interviewed Babasaheb at his Home Later. There was also a Press reporter to cover the event.

On the whole the camp was a big Success. Though I think that it can still be much more organized but guess it will develop as time passes. Abhijeet was very clever in informing the donkey owners. Vitthal had traveled a lot to inform in many villages. But still some villages were remaining. So Abhijeet sent Vitthal to a Wedding where many villagers who had assembled. Vitthal announced thecamp there and we had a good response. All the donkeys were well looked after and Dr.Rao said that after the Deworming and Vaccination the animal becomes stout anh healthy within days.
